Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

With Hurricane Dorian projected to make landfall later this week in the state of Florida it is important to remember what to do to prepare yourself and your property before the potential hurricane strike. If your home is in the path of a Hurricane, such as Dorian, there are some simple things you can do to help mitigate the damages. First thing, heed any evacuation orders from local officials.

  1. Check gutters, downspouts and drains to make sure they are clear of debris.
  2. Check around the buildings and roof and move inside anything that could become windblown (e.g., lawn furniture, trashcans etc.).
  3. Have plywood or hurricane shutters ready to mount over windows.
  4. Test portable generators make sure there is an adequate fuel supply.
  5. Consider shutting down computers, systems and processes to avoid power surge damage.
  6. Relocate anything from basements, windows and ground-level doors.
  7. Mobilize any contractors that maintain the facility and put them on alert should you need them during or after the storm.
  8. Move your vehicles to higher ground if necessary, to protect them from flood areas.
  9. Assign someone to monitor the weather conditions and the storm track and be on alert for evacuation orders.
  10. Back up important digital/computer records off-site where they can be accessed even if you do not have access to your home.
